What to Expect after Breast Lift Surgery

bras
Following breast lift surgery—medically referred to as mastopexy—the majority of women can expect some degree of swelling, bruising, and/or tenderness in the breasts, though these symptoms are temporary and should diminish gradually over the course of about two to three weeks. Often described as minimal, any pain or discomfort experienced can usually be easily controlled with over-the-counter medication. Most individuals feel well enough to resume normal, non-strenuous jobs and daily routines after approximately one week; however, our Reno plastic surgeon, Dr. Tiffany McCormack, generally advises patients to avoid vigorous exercise or physical activities for at least a few weeks to give the breasts enough time to fully heal.

Potential scarring after breast lift surgery will depend on the particular incision pattern used to perform the procedure, as well as how closely scar management and postoperative care instructions are followed. The three incisional techniques offered by Dr. McCormack include a periareolar incision (made circumferentially around the areola), a “lollipop” incision (made around the areola and down to the inframammary crease), and an anchor incision (extending around the areola, down the underside of the breast, and horizontally along the inframammary crease). The exact method will be determined by the specific needs of the individual, though all three options can typically be concealed underneath most blouse, bathing suit, and bra varieties. In addition, scarring tends to fade over time, and patients often express that the outcome of breast lift surgery far outweighs the drawback of possible scarring.

Ultimately, once healing is complete and the results of surgery are fully realized, the majority of women experience a significant boost in self-confidence and esteem. Breast lift is truly a rewarding procedure for the right patients.

Will Pregnancy Affect My Breast Implants?

pregnant-woman

This is a great question asked by numerous women seeking to enhance the size and/or shape of their breasts with implants. Prior to answering this question, it should be noted that pregnancy and any subsequent breastfeeding will have a unique effect on every woman’s body and breasts, so the physical changes experienced by some individuals will be completely different than what some others may encounter. That being said, the majority of women usually notice swelling and enlargement in the breasts during pregnancy, often followed by some degree of volume reduction once they have stopped breastfeeding.

Fortunately, regardless of the specific physical changes the breasts endure, the structural integrity of breast implants should not be affected and/or compromised by pregnancy. As a matter of fact, a possible benefit of having received breast implants before becoming pregnant is that they tend to provide some degree of protection against any volume reduction that might be experienced. However, none of this is to claim that the presence of breast implants automatically means the breasts will return to their exact pre-pregnancy shape and size. Depending on the particular physical changes that occur, there may be some breast sagging and/or skin laxity that wasn’t present beforehand. Based on the the severity of these concerns, a mastopexy (breast lift) and/or bigger implant might be needed or desired to regain the breasts’ pre-pregnancy size, contour, and position on the chest.

If you have additional questions about breast implants, or if you would like to schedule a consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeon—Tiffany McCormack, MD—please don’t hesitate to contact our practice today.

Reno Plastic Surgeon Anticipates Surge in Mommy Makeovers for Mother’s Day

Mommy Makeovers Popular Before Mother's Day Says Reno Plastic Surgery Practice

Reno, NV — According to recent reports from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there were more than 325,000 mommy makeover procedures performed nationally on women ages 20 to 39 in the past year, while 62% of moms say they would consider undergoing a procedure if cost were not an issue. Reno plastic surgeon Dr. Tiffany McCormack says she expects these numbers to continue increasing with Mother’s Day on the horizon. She says she has found patients are more aware of the costly effects of motherhood on one’s appearance during the holiday, and the overall increase in plastic surgery procedures (5% since 2010) has encouraged patients at her practice to seek the wide variety of enhancements available to help them improve self confidence and feminine beauty through a mommy makeover.

At her center for plastic surgery in Reno, Dr. McCormack provides services in a wide range of cosmetic procedures including breast augmentation, tummy tucks, facelifts, and BOTOX® Cosmetic. However, she says she has observed a growing trend in plastic surgery requests amongst her patients for mommy makeover procedures. Combining body contouring and breast surgery treatments, the mommy makeover is targeted towards women of childbearing age to help alleviate some of the signs of aging and motherhood. Dr. McCormack says she is expecting a swell in demand for the mommy makeover-related procedures like tummy tuck in Reno in the weeks approaching Mother’s Day as more women seek confidence in the beauty of being a mom.

Dr. McCormack says common procedures associated with the mommy makeover include breast augmentation, the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure performed across the country according to ASPS statistics, as well as tummy tucks, breast lifts, and liposuction. While these procedures can be combined to help reduce recovery time and improve results, she says each procedure also offers effective treatment of problem areas by themselves as well. Dr. McCormack says women seeking a boost in their appearance for Mother’s Day, either as a gift from someone or for themselves, also have other aesthetic options available to them that can make significant improvements to facial lines or a tired appearance.

Regardless of which procedures a patient is considering, Dr. McCormack stresses the importance of consulting with a board-certified and experienced plastic surgeon before undergoing any cosmetic treatment. She says patients have the opportunity to make a significant change in their level of self-confidence through plastic surgery, and choosing the right practice for a procedure is essential for achieving the desired outcome: “Having had children myself, I understand the changes a mother’s body goes through following pregnancy. I find strength in being able to help women regain confidence in their appearance and feel great about their bodies by providing something not always attainable through diet and exercise alone.”

Reno Plastic Surgeon Says Mommy Makeover Patients Seek Natural, Restorative Results

Reno Plastic Surgery Practice on Popularity of Mommy Makeover Procedure

Reno, NV — With the growing popularity of cosmetic surgery, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that more than 325,000 mommy makeover procedures were performed nationally on women ages 20 to 39 last year. Dr. Tiffany McCormack, a plastic surgeon in Reno, NV, says mommy makeovers have been increasing in demand at her practice over the past few years as more patients are looking for cosmetic enhancements that draw out their natural beauty rather than high-profile surgeries. Dr. McCormack says breast augmentation in Reno, as well as other mommy makeover-related procedures, can achieve subtle restoration in women who have recently had children.

At her Reno plastic surgery practice, Dr. McCormack says breast surgery is one of the most common procedures she performs in combination with a mommy makeover. A new trend in cosmetic enhancements, the mommy makeover procedure typically incorporates several breast and body contouring surgeries such as tummy tuck, liposuction, and breast lifts to help women restore their figures to the firm, supple shape they enjoyed before childbirth. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 62% of mothers say they would consider undergoing a mommy makeover procedure if cost were not an issue.

Dr. McCormack says the majority of the patients at her practice come to the office simply wanting to look like themselves again. She says a particularly troublesome area for many women’s appearance following childbirth is their breasts, as breast-feeding and the rigors of pregnancy tend to take a significant toll on the shape and volume of one’s breasts. While there are women who want a higher-profile procedure with a more drastic size increase, Dr. McCormack says many of her patients are looking only to counteract the effects of childbirth on their bodies and enjoy the wonders of motherhood without sacrificing their appearance.

“After pregnancy it is common for the breasts to lose volume and shape. This may occur whether you have breast fed or not. Several patients have said that they were never very big before; however, they are not even able to fill out a bikini top anymore- they feel as though the skin to tissue ratio is reversed meaning that there is too much skin and too little breast tissue left.”

The most recent ASPS statistics show that breast augmentation, the most popular cosmetic surgical enhancement, rose 4% in 2011 to over 307,000 procedures. Dr. McCormack says the surge in demand for breast augmentation over the past few years has helped contribute to the popularity and awareness of mommy makeovers as well. She says she also performs a significant number of breast lifts with implants to help her patients restore perkiness and youth to their figure.

“The majority of my patients are seeking a very natural look whereby they can wear clothes such as tank tops, bikini tops and sun dresses with confidence, yet not appear augmented publicly. A breast augmentation can help restore a more balanced shape. Surprisingly, the size of implant does not always need to be very large to achieve this. Most of my patients are seeking a perkier almost athletic shape that suits their particular frame.”

Whether patients are looking for a comprehensive mommy makeover or a single aesthetic surgical enhancement, Dr. McCormack says plastic surgery, particularly breast augmentation, can help replenish one’s sense of femininity and improve their self-confidence, both essential parts of a woman’s outlook on life. Regardless of the procedure, she urges patients to seek the consultation of an experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon before undergoing any cosmetic procedure.

“My goal is to help a woman restore a natural appearance that is not over the top or obvious so to speak.”
